The Commission for Protection against Discrimination opened a total of 210 new cases of inaccessible environment. This follows extensive checks across the country in April and May. The Commission\'s expectation is that between 80 and 120 new cases will be opened every month, as part of the CPD\'s open-ended campaign “Accessible Bulgaria”. 

The Commission recalls that in each case, if it is established that there is an inaccessible environment for people with disabilities, the institution has the right to impose an initial fine of up to BGN 2,000, and if the violation is not corrected in a timely manner, the fines can reach BGN 20,000 for each individual case. “Accessible Bulgaria” is a cause for us and we believe that creating an accessible environment is a matter of principle. 

Every public facility must be made accessible to people with disabilities. We are well-intentioned, including giving certificates for accessible environments once they have been implemented somewhere with quality. But it should be clear that we do not hesitate to apply the full rigor of the law where there is no access for people with disabilities,\" said the chair of the Commission for Protection against Discrimination, Associate Professor Ana Dzhumalieva. The newly established cases in the CPD are assigned to the fifth specialised permanent sitting of the Commission, which includes Zlatina Dukova, Dr. Vladimira Stoimenova and Petar Kichashki. The new proceedings will be mainly against utility providers, telecoms, banks, insurance companies, state and municipal institutions, etc.
