On 26.03.2024, Dr. Polya Hristova, State Expert at the Department of Analysis, Prevention and International Cooperation, and Nikola Ognyanov, Senior Specialist at the Department of Analysis, Prevention and International Cooperation, took part in a discussion on “Digital Democracy: European Regulation of Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Rights”, organized by the Bureau of the European Parliament in Bulgaria.
The purpose of the discussion was to discuss the different aspects related to the implementation of the Regulation on harmonised rules on artificial intelligence (AI Law) adopted on 13 March 2024, the next steps for the European institutions and Member States, possible measures and good practices that can create greater guarantees for the respect of human rights at the local level. Particular attention was paid to the European elections and the risks that the use of new AI technologies poses to the right to expression and information during elections.
The event was attended by the representatives of the European Parliament Ms. Eva Maydel, Mr. Petar Vitanov, Ms. Nadia Shabani - Chair of the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law, Ms. Polya Kanyova - Ministry of e-Government, Mr. Stefan Angelov - Access to Information Program, Ralitsa Kovacheva - Editor-in-Chief of Factcheck, Tsvetelina Peneva - Democracy and Legality Association and Chair of the Public Council at the CEC.
