Round table of ECRI and CPD on the recommendations to our country in the ECRI monitoring report
On 24 April 2025, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) in cooperation with the Bulgarian Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) organised a round table in Sofia. The purpose of the event was to provide participants with an opportunity to discuss future actions in relation to the recommendations contained in the ECRI monitoring report on Bulgaria, published in October 2022, and the related interim conclusions for follow-up action on Bulgaria, published in February 2025. Opening speeches at the event were made by Atanas Zafirov, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the National Council for Cooperation on Ethnic and Integration Issues, Genka Georgieva, Director General for Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bertil Coutier, President of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, and Ana Dzhumalieva, President of the Commission for Protection against Discrimination. In addition to representatives of national and local authorities, the roundtable was attended by representatives of civil society as well as members of groups of interest to ECRI. The aim of this event is to make a positive contribution to the national debate on combating racism, intolerance and related discrimination in the country. In the different sessions of the round table there was a general presentation of the ECRI and its work, the main findings and recommendations in the ECRI report on Bulgaria and their implementation, ECRI and Council of Europe standards on hate speech and hate crimes, how to effectively counter racist and homophobic hate speech, how to effectively integrate and include Roma. The general opinion of the participants in the forum was that the aim of this event to make a positive contribution to the national debate on combating racism, intolerance and related discrimination in the country has been achieved.
